Drie astronauten veilig aan boord van het internationale ruimtestation (update)

Drie astronauten die maandag aan boord van een Russisch Sojoez-ruimtevaartuig de ruimte in werden gelanceerd, kwamen bijna acht uur later het internationale ruimtestation binnen. een opluchting voor familieleden en wetenschappers maanden nadat een raketstoring een andere missie afbrak.

NASA en Roscosmos zeiden dat alle systemen aan boord normaal werkten en dat de astronauten zich prima voelden tijdens de zes uur durende reis naar het ruimtestation. Na twee uur in hun capsule te hebben gewacht om te bevestigen dat hun schip stevig aan het station was aangemeerd, ze verlieten de capsule om zich bij drie astronauten te voegen die al aan boord waren van de buitenpost in een baan om 1:37 uur (1940 GMT; 14:40 uur EST.)

De huidige bemanning van NASA's Serena Aunon-kanselier, De Rus Sergei Prokopyev en de Duitser Alexander Gerst stonden te wachten om de nieuwkomers te begroeten. Ze zijn gepland om op 20 december terug te keren naar de aarde.

Een Sojoez-FG-raket met NASA-astronaut Nick Hague en Roscosmos' Alexei Ovchinin mislukte twee minuten in zijn vlucht op 11 oktober. het activeren van een automatisch reddingssysteem dat hun capsule in een steile rit terug naar de aarde stuurde. Het Sojoez-ongeluk in oktober was de eerste afgebroken lancering van de bemanning voor het Russische ruimteprogramma sinds 1983. toen twee Sovjet-kosmonauten veilig overboord werden gegooid na een explosie op het lanceerplatform.

Russische ruimtevaartfunctionarissen hebben maatregelen genomen om herhaling van zo'n mislukte raket te voorkomen. Sinds het ongeluk in oktober, vier succesvolle onbemande lanceringen van Sojoez-satellieten zijn uitgevoerd om het pad vrij te maken voor de lancering van de bemanning op maandag.

Na de succesvolle lancering van maandag, NASA-beheerder Jim Bridenstine tweette zijn dank aan zijn Russische tegenhanger Dmitry Rogozin en aan NASA en Roscosmos-ruimteteams "voor hun toewijding om deze lancering tot een succes te maken."

Het Sojoez-ruimtevaartuig is momenteel het enige voertuig dat bemanningen naar het ruimtestation kan brengen. maar Rusland dreigt dat monopolie de komende jaren te verliezen met de komst van SpaceX's Dragon en Boeing's Starliner-bemanningscapsules.
